In a world filled with noise, it’s easy to mistake volume for value. Every day, we are bombarded with voices—opinions, expectations, judgments, and fears—some external, some internal. But not every voice you hear is meant to be heard, and certainly, not every voice deserves a seat at the table of your heart.
The Enemy’s Whisper vs. God’s Word
From the very beginning, the enemy has used voices to lead people astray. In the Garden of Eden, Eve didn’t fall because she lacked God’s instruction—she fell because she entertained the wrong voice. The serpent’s words planted doubt, and that doubt grew into disobedience.
Even today, the enemy’s voice is subtle but persistent. He whispers fear, shame, and inadequacy. He amplifies insecurities and reminds you of past failures. If you’re not careful, his voice can sound like your own—like truth. But God’s Word reminds us: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27) The key is discernment—knowing the difference between God’s truth and the enemy’s deception.
Not Every Opinion is Divine Counsel
People will always have something to say. Some mean well; others don’t. But human voices, no matter how loud or persuasive, should never carry more weight than God’s voice.
The Bible warns us about seeking approval from people rather than God. “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” (Galatians 1:10)
When making decisions, ask yourself: Is this advice aligned with God’s truth? Is this voice leading me closer to Him or further away? If it’s bringing confusion, condemnation, or fear, it’s not from God.
So how do we drown out the voices that aren’t meant to be heard? Here are three key steps:
- Anchor Yourself in God’s Word – The more you know God’s voice, the easier it is to recognize counterfeits. Daily time in scripture helps you filter truth from deception.
- Surround Yourself with Godly Counsel – Proverbs 11:14 tells us, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” Seek voices that point you to God, not away from Him.
- Practice Stillness and Discernment – Not every thought requires a response. Not every voice deserves your attention. “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) Silence the unnecessary so you can hear the essential.
God speaks in truth, love, and clarity. Any voice that contradicts His promises is a distraction, not a direction. The enemy’s goal is to keep you confused, fearful, and stuck. God’s desire is to lead you in peace, purpose, and freedom.
Today, take a moment to ask yourself: Whose voice have I been listening to? Is it lifting me up or weighing me down? If it’s not from God, it’s time to tune it out. Not every voice deserves to be heard, but God’s voice? That one is always worth listening to.
